The John R Kelly, built in 1883, was wrecked on the rocks that bear her name on the 25 may 1899. She was a wooden barque of 2209 tons carrying a general cargo such as ink, iron piping, grinding wheels, paraffin etc. The majority of cargo was salvaged locally.

On 20 December 1970 Dave Eynon and Geoff Douglas located the wreck on the southeast corner of the Kelly Rocks. She lies in 10 metres of water in a sheltered area which is covered by kelp. This is a good dive as an introduction to diving in the Falklands.
