Seabirds
We are fortunate in the South Atlantic to have many bird species which are largely dependant on the marine environment. Albatross, shearwaters, petrels and penguins are all exclusively marine while many others such as terns, cormorants and gulls spend at least part of their life cycle at sea.

Our offshore islands offer a wonderful habitat for all of our sea birds, and a visit to Kidney or Couchon islands and Volunteer Point by boat offers the tourist the opportunity to see all these wonderful animals in their natural habitat.

Both the black-browed albatross and petrel with their long wings are masters of gliding and a delight to see when trying to get airborne.

The feeding habits of all the sea birds vary from hooking up their prey to scavenging or simply by diving underwater after their prey.

Penguins are everyone's favourite bird and in the Falklands we are very lucky to have a number of species. Rather ungainly on land all penguins have adapted well to swim and feed underwater and on a boat trip are often found porpoising out of the water taking a quick breath with every leap.

Traveling by boat you can see and enjoy a lot more of our marine animals such as.

- The Cormorants forming large rafts and all diving simultaneously below the water.

- The Rockhopper Penguins climbing up the rock face of Kidney and Couchon Island.

- The Shearwaters forming large rafts in the early evening prior to flying into their nesting places on Kidney Island.

- The Gentoo and King penguins coming and going on Volunteer Beach or

- just sit back and enjoy the ride and views with a cup of tea or coffee.
